Why Darwin grout goes dark

Heat, humidity and grout that never fully dries

Most grout is cement-based and porous. It soaks up water, soap, skin oils and whatever is in the mop bucket, and because grout lines sit lower than the tiles, dirty water settles there. Over time the lines go from light grey to brown to nearly black.

The Top End climate speeds that up. It’s warm all year and humid for much of it, especially through the build-up and the wet season. Mould and mildew grow best where it is warm and damp and the air doesn’t move much, which describes a lot of shower recesses. A bathroom that is used every day and never dries out between showers is ideal for them.

Mopping alone doesn’t fix it, and bleach sprays tend to lighten the surface for a while without removing what has soaked in. A proper clean breaks down the build-up inside the grout and then rinses and extracts the dirty water so it doesn’t dry back into the lines.

Wet-season tip. Run the exhaust fan or air-con during and after showers, and leave the bathroom door open when you can. Moving air is the cheapest mould prevention there is.

Before and after

What a clean can and can’t do

We’d rather set the right expectation now than disappoint you on the day.

Usually lifts

Everyday dirt, soap scum, body oils and grease, and most surface mould and mildew staining on grout.

Often improves, may not fully lift

Grout that has been dark for years, deep-set stains and old mould shadows. It will be much cleaner, but may not return to its original colour. Colour sealing evens it out.

Cleaning can't fix

Cracked, crumbling or missing grout, mould growing inside silicone, and water getting in behind tiles. These need repair work, which we don't do. We'll tell you if we see it.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does tile and grout cleaning cost in Darwin?

Our prices are published: a shower recess is $159, a standard bathroom or ensuite is $229, and floor tiles are $9 per square metre. Clear grout sealing is added from $5 per square metre. The minimum booking is $159.

Which areas do you cover?

Darwin and its suburbs, Palmerston and the rural area, including Darwin CBD, Stuart Park, Parap, Fannie Bay, Nightcliff, Casuarina, Leanyer, Karama, Palmerston, Howard Springs, Humpty Doo. The same prices apply across the whole service area.

Can you get mould out of shower grout?

Usually, yes. Surface mould and mildew staining on grout normally lifts with the right treatment and scrubbing. Staining that has soaked deep into old grout may leave a shadow, and mould growing inside silicone generally can’t be cleaned out. We’ll tell you which is which before we start.

Do you do regrouting or fix leaking showers?

No. We only clean and seal tiles and grout. If your grout is cracked or missing, or you suspect a leak, you’ll need a tiling or waterproofing specialist. If we notice signs of either during a clean, we’ll point them out.

Do you clean outdoor tiles and pool surrounds?

Not under this brand. Outdoor tiles, pool surrounds, pavers, driveways and roofs are handled by our sister brand, PressClean Darwin.
